How Long Does it Take to Make Money Blogging

I wanted to answer this question because many of you out there are thinking of starting a blog, or you already have one, and you’re wondering how long it could take to make money with a blog.

First of all, let me discuss with you the reasons why you may want to start a blog.

You Want Blogging to be Your Career

If you simply like to write and you have a lot to say, you could become a professional blogger. A blog can be about any topic, and it’s possible to create an income out of a blog of any topic. Obviously some topics are more popular than others, but this also creates competition, so it really evens out in the end, how popular your blog can become.

If there are a million people interested in a topic and there are 1,000 blogs already on that topic, that is the same competition level as 1,000 people being interested in a topic that there is only one blog about. The 1,000 blogs will be sharing the 1 million people, evening out to about 1,000 a blog (if it was actually shared equally), and the single blog with no other competition will get ALL of the 1,000 people interested in that topic.

You Want to Use a Blog as a Promotional Tool

If you’re an internet marketer, or if you’re interested in internet marketing, a blog is a great place to run that business. You choose a “niche” (or topic) and write good content about that topic and intermingle affiliate products, etc. that people can buy through you, and then you can get a commission.

You can also use a blog to promote any other online business you have. Maybe you have your own products or services available on your own website. You can use a blog to get more traffic to your website. By using the right keywords, you can get organic traffic, looking for your product or service and then lead those people to your website where they can purchase your product or hire you for the service you provide.

You Just Want to Write a Blog

In this case, you may not care about whether your blog earns any money at all. You just want to do it. I have a friend who has a blog and I keep telling her that she could totally make money with it, but she just really doesn’t have an interest in that. She’s happy with her current way of making income and doesn’t have the need or desire for more money. She just wants to use her blog as a hobby.

If this is you, stick around anyway because your blogging could really take off to the point that you’d prefer to blog full time instead of working at your current job. And when that happens, you’ll need to know how to create an income out of it.

How Long Does it Take to Make Money Blogging?

The length of time it takes to answer this question in full is about the length of time it could take to make money with a blog.

Now, to be serious, the length of time it takes to make an income from a blog depends on a variety of variables:

1. Your Topic

Some topics can make more money, and some topics can make money faster. Other topics, vice-versa. I’m not going to go into which topic you should choose because I think you should write about what you want to write about and something you know a lot about. That is the best way to go about choosing a topic.

2. How Well You Promote It

There is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved in promoting a blog and there are tons of things you can do to promote it. If you do ALL the things necessary to promote your blog to get your blog the exposure it needs, you will be way more likely to get more traffic and therefore have more possibilities of earning income with your blog. The Blog and Retire eCourse will help you focus your energies in the right place and tell you all the things you need from day 1 to day 25, to day 225. Sign up for week one at It’s free.

3. The Ways You Promote It

Once again, there are tons of ways to promote your blog. If you do all of them, you’ll be more likely to succeed. See

4. Who You Promote Your Blog To

You need to market your blog to the right type of person. If your blog is about gardening, you need to find people who are interested in gardening. How do you find the right type of people to expose your blog to, and how do you get them to come to your blog? I tell you how to do that in the Blog and Retire eCourse

5. The Ways You Decide to Create Revenue from Your Blog

There are many ways to make money with a blog. One is through Google AdSense, or other pay-per-click ad services. You can also use a service like Text-Link-Ads. All you do is sign up and wait for an advertizer to publish an ad for you. Text Link Ads does all the work. If you sign up with Text Link Ads, do me a favor and let them know that Lisha Yost referred you 🙂

You can also get paid to write blog posts by signing up with Social Spark, or just doing paid reviews for other companies/websites/products.

Also, once you get a lot of views per day, you can charge for adspace on your blog. Some people charge up to $500 per month for a 250×250 pixel ad to be placed on their blog. Obviously if you get less views, you will have to charge less, but I think you can see how this can earn you lots of dough. This is my preferred way to make money blogging because it seems to be the most ethical and consistent.

Another way to make money with a blog is by selling affiliate products by recommending them to your readers. There are tons of affiliate sites. ClickBank is probably the most popular. You can also become an affiliate of any other sites you use. So if you like a service you’ve used on the web and you want to share that with others, you might as well use your affiliate link when you recommend it. As you see, I am doing that in this very blog post. I don’t do it often, but I’m doing it now because it’s relevant to this post.

6. How Much Money is Enough

Everyone has different financial goals. Do you simply want to make a living, or do you want to live large and in charge? Obviously, the higher your financial goals, the longer it will take you to get there. But some people have made a solid income to live off of with their blogs within 6 months. It could take longer. It depends on all the other variables and how hard to work at it.

7. How Much Time and Energy You’re Willing to Invest

That brings me to my final point. How hard are you willing to work at your blogging career? It is possible to build a solid blog in 6 months just by working at it part time. But think about how much faster things would go along if you were blogging and promoting your blog as if it was your full time job. Obviously the more time you invest, the quicker things will pick up for you.

The Blog and Retire eCourse will tell you how to build a successful blog in one year, just by doing blogging tasks, step-by-step, 1 hour a day, 6 days a week. Visit to sign up or learn more. Notice I did not include “how much money you’re willing to invest” as one of the variables. This is because I truly believe that you could create an income from a free blog. People say others’ won’t respect your blog because it’s through a free blogging platform, but that doesn’t make any sense. You shouldn’t have to pay for respect. If you are offering something truly of value, it should not matter whatsoever whether you’re paying for your domain or not.

By blogging through a free blogging platform, you are “paying” by sharing your url with the blogging platform you are using. That is free advertizement for that blogging website. Just like when you use a free email service, you are advertizing that email website. Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo (plus many others) are free because it gives them exposure.

You may, by choice, eventually want to turn that free blog of yours into a url of your very own, but to start with, you can write a blog on a free blogging platform, and once you’re making a few dollars a month, you can redirect your free blog to your own url.

You can register a .com domain for as cheap as $5 (currently) at (which you will have to re-register each year for approximately $10 a year) and domain hosting costs as little as $8 a month (realistically, even though they say as low at $3.95). Not a huge investment if you’re planning on making upwards of $2,000 a month. Personally, I use and it has worked well for me. Obviously I use blogger for this blog, but I do have other blogs on my own domain.

So that’s that, in a nutshell. I hope I gave you an idea as to what you can expect if you’re trying to earn income through blogging. Like I said, it depends on many things, and no two blogs or blog promotions are alike.

Some of the links above include my affiliate id. Those are the websites I use for my needs. I truly recommend those services, otherwise I would not suggest them. Should you ever choose to use any of these sites for your blogging needs, please try it through my links above so I can get a snippet of commission for recommending it to you. It doesn’t cost you anything, you would simply be doing me a favor. Thanks in advance!
