4 Steps to Getting What You Want In Life

How to Accomplish Your Goals and Fulfill Your Dreams

I spend most of my time thinking about my goals (what I want to accomplish) and my dreams (what I want to do and what I want my life to be like in the future). But I also spend a lot of my time thinking about how to accomplish my goals and acquire my dreams.

Not only do I spend a lot of time thinking about these things, but I spend a lot of time working toward these things; doing the things it takes to accomplish my goals and acquire my dreams.

Getting where you want to go in life is a 4 step process.

1. What Do You Want Your Life To Be Like?

Figure out what you want out of life. Where do you want to live? What do you want to spend your time doing? What is your dream life?

Life isn’t all about getting what you want, but there’s no reason that you should be allowed to do things to get what you want out of life, as long as you are not harming others in the process.

And just because you have dreams it doesn’t mean that you’re 100% going to be able to acquire whatever lifestyle you want. However, if you don’t do what it takes to fulfill your dreams, you will never get what you really want.

Some people want to be rich, but they’re horrible with their spending habits. They’re also horrible with how they spend their time. If you’re not well off financially, there is usually a reason for that. Usually it has to do with the choices you’ve made thus far. Yes, sometimes we are just unlucky and born into a poor family. We have to work our way up all by ourselves. But it is not impossible. I myself came from a very unwealthy family on welfare, etc. However, I have created a life for myself of financial responsibility and I am working my way closer and closer to fulfilling all my dreams. Some of my dreams have already been fulfilled.

Some dreams are out of reach. For instance, you can’t change others, so if your dreams involve other people, you may be stuck with whatever you get as far as the family you’re born into. But for anything you have control of, you can figure out how you’d want it to be, and then work on the goals you need to accomplish in order to fulfill those dreams.

2. Figure Out Your Goals

By accomplishing your goals, you will be able to acquire your dreams. Dreams and goals work hand in hand. Without the one, the other is obsolete.

Goals: Write them down, or don’t write them down (or write them down). Whatever you do, have your goals in the forefront of your mind. Why do you get up in the morning? Because you want to accomplish your goals. If you didn’t have any goals in life, you wouldn’t get out of bed at all. Getting out of bed is not just to avoid consequence, it is to accomplish something. Your goal may be just to survive. Even that is a goal. Your goal may be to avoid a consequence. That is also a goal. Either way, you get out of bed for some reason.

But surviving and avoiding consequence should not be the only reason you get out of bed. Think about what you want out of life. Then make goals that will get you there. It doesn’t have to just be financial (money is not the most important thing in life). Your goal could be to spend a certain amount of quality time with your family or spouse. Or your goal may be to lose weight or get fit. Your goal could also very well be financial, but you have to have a reason that you want to be a millionaire (for example). For me, it is to help others. So many people struggle financially and I want to help anyone around me that I can.

Whatever your goals are, be specific. Make long term and short term goals. The short term goals will help you accomplish your long term goals. If you want to be a millionaire, you need to work your way up to that. You can’t do it over night (at least, it’s highly unlikely anyway). So first try to make $50,000, then once you’ve reached that goal, work toward $100,000. Then $200,000, then $500,000, then you can have your crack at the highly coveted $1,000,000.

Whatever you do, you will not accomplish your goals if you don’t know what they are and if you don’t figure out the steps it takes to do so. Accomplishing your goals takes action.

3. How To Accomplish Your Goals

Writing down your goals is just fine and dandy, but if you don’t figure out how to go about accomplishing your goals, you’re most likely not going to.

If you want to spend more time with family, what do you need to do in order to accomplish that goal? Watch less t.v. (or take away your kids phones?), plan a family game night, or a day to the park or beach. Maybe you work too much and that’s what takes you away from your family. You either need to be more efficient at work, or ask your boss for more flexibility. No matter how much time you need to work to pay the bills, or to run a business, there’s always a way to spend at least an extra hour with your spouse or family.

If you want to lose weight, or get fit, you need to think about the ways you can do that. Spend 30 minutes exercising a day. Add one more healthy item to your meals, and one less unhealthy item. Stay away from fast food, soda, and alcohol. Eat smaller snacks throughout the day so you don’t gorge yourself during meal time. Go to bed earlier so that you’re not tempted to have a midnight snack.

If you want to become a millionaire (for example) you need to figure out what you need to do to become a millionaire. This is a much more vague goal because there are an unlimited amount of ways to become a millionaire. However, if you are at a job that you know you will never make more than $30,000 a year, you are not going to become a millionaire if you stay at that job for your entire life (unless you live with your parents forever, and they feed you all your meals and never make you pay any bills… at that rate you could become a millionaire in 33 years, which is a long time to live with your parents as an adult).

So, you have to figure out some way to change your job, or work for yourself. Most people who work for a company never become a millionaire. You have to be high up in a company to make that kind of money. By starting your own business (although risky) you have a much higher chance of becoming a millionaire, if you plan it right. Don’t quit your day job until you know your income is stable enough for you to survive at first. You will most likely have to work on your own business a bit after work and on weekends to build it up to a steady income.

Whatever you do, create a plan and be specific in what it will take to accomplish your goals. Think about the consequences that could occur because of any action you take, and always have a plan B.

4. Take Action

Now you’ve thought of all the ways you can accomplish your goals. If you don’t take action, nothing’s going to happen. Funny how life works that way.

How do you get yourself to do the things you’ve thought of?

I’d hate to say it, but once again, writing things down makes them more concrete. Write down your dreams, write down the goals you need to accomplish to acquire those dreams, then write down the things you need to do to accomplish your goals. If you read that every day, or put that in a place where you can see it often, you will be more likely to take action.

The other way to get yourself to take action is to involve other people. Tell others what your dreams, goals, and tasks are and tell them that you really want to stick to a plan of action. You can even tell others to hold you accountable when you start doing something that goes against your plan.

Nothing is for certain and obstacles can come in your way. However, you are typically going to be your biggest obstacle. Keep a positive attitude and believe in yourself. Stay healthy and get the rest you need to stay motivated to accomplish your goals and fulfill your dreams.
