Blogging Tips for 2014

3d white man with a laptop sitting on the labels BLOGA new year is almost here. I hope you had a prosperous year. I know I am ending my year on a high note and am making plans early to continue this momentum. As bloggers, it doesn’t matter if it’s the beginning of the year, the end of the year, or somewhere in-between, we should always be thinking of ways to engage our readers and keep them coming back. So what kinds of things can we do in the coming year to keep our readers engaged?

Get Writing

In order to be a writer, we should write every day. I know that sometimes it gets difficult, especially if you have a full time job and are blogging when you get home. I know what that’s like, because I’m doing that now. It’s late and I’m sitting at my desk plucking on the keyboard, writing this post. Why do I do it, because I’m a writer and this is the only time I have where I can sit down and write. Writing every day sharpens our writing skills and makes us better writers. Just as an all-star pitcher practices every day, an all-star writer has to do the same.

Get Social

llikeThe power of Social Media is awesome. I’m watching my online presence grow. Every week I see more followers on Twitter or friends/likes on Facebook. Seeing this growth excites me and keeps me engaged. If you are not on Twitter or Facebook, take a minute and sign up, it’s free. Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and all the others are excellent ways to get your word out. The important thing about these sites is that it’s all about being social and that means you need to share other people’s comments, posts, and ideas, as well as your own.

Get Creative

Oh yeah, then there’s the blog. Think of interesting ways to enhance your blog. Is there a new plug-in you can use or maybe adding a SHARE button will add extra engagement. Look at other popular sites and see what they are doing. Don’t reinvent the wheel, see what is working, and then put it on your site. Look into other media forms such as video and audio to include. This year, I’m going to test the waters to include video and podcasting. I think these are great new media streams to bring readers (and listeners) to your site.

Get Organized

Grab a new calendar or print a blank one from the web, it doesn’t need to be fancy; it just has to be big enough to include some notes. Decide on the dates that you are going to post to your blog, and then fill in the topic for that day. This will help you stay focused on your topics so you are not sitting there in front of your PC wondering, “What am I going to write about today?”

These are the four points that I am going to work on in the New Year. Whether your dream is to become a professional writer or just to become a better blogger, I hope these tips help you to reach your goals. I hope you use them to increase your readership and to make your blog rise to the top.

There is one final tip that I really should include:

Now Get Going!

To your success,

Dan
