5 Most Common Blogging Mistakes You Should Avoid

mistakesMany people nowadays are jumping onto the bandwagon of creating their own blog for their business. You’re probably one of them. Everyone has heard success stories of how blogging can extremely benefit their business profit and sales so lots of people just dive into it without knowing if it will work for them.

There’s nothing wrong with following the trend. However, the problem here is that, due to lack of knowledge, preparation, and blogging experience, your abrupt aggressiveness to be part of the blogging world can lead you to disaster, failure, or a simple waste of time.

Before you unleash your first business blog, you have to make sure that you are doing it right. One important thing that you should remember, which majority of bloggers often overlook, is knowing the most common blogging mistakes that can tarnish your website. As much as possible, avoid making these mistakes. Focus on your goals – attract interest, build authority, and create good relationships.

To spare yourself from some growing pains and prepare you for what’s ahead in the blogging world, here are the 5 most common mistakes that you should avoid.

1. Writing for everyone

Don’t try to please everyone because it won’t help you gain authority for your site. Moreover, do not write for mass appeal because your content will only drown in white noise.

So what’s the best thing to do? Find a specific niche that you want to cater to. If you know who your target audience is, you can easily deliver their needs and add some personal experience in your posts to capture your readers’ attention.

2. Tring to be someone else

Trying to be like somebody else is the biggest mistake that every newbie blogger does. If you want to get your own audience you have to be yourself. Do not copy what other successful bloggers are doing. Instead, make your own style in writing and in promoting your website.

You can be your best blogger self if you invest sufficient time, skills, and effort in establishing your own blog and in knowing your readers. Be cool and do not be afraid of making little mistakes. You need it to improve your knowledge and abilities in blogging. Plus, vulnerability attracts.

3. Lack of interaction with your audience

Blogging became popular because of the connection it offers between the blogger and the audience. You have to be open with feedback to create a healthy relationship with your readers. Keep your comment section open and try to respond to your readers as quickly as possible.

4. Forgetting the advantage of social media

If you want to drive more traffic to your website you need to learn how to share. Make use of social networking sites and share your posts to a wide audience. It’s free and it is a good avenue to reach more potential readers and visitors. Interact with others in your niche and you’ll be on your way to growing your fans and followers.

5. Inconsistency in blogging

To avoid losing your readership you have to publish posts regularly. The advantage of posting new articles constantly is to attract new visitors and retain your usual readers. Keep your content fresh, accurate, and up to date. In this way, your blog will remain on topic and relevant in your niche.

Starting a blog and handling it is a daunting task. Many beginners give up too soon because they can’t keep up the momentum in blogging. Managing a blog is like running a start-up business. It is not easy and there are a lot of challenges along the way. But if you are brave enough to face those hurdles and you are ready to take the road toward blogging stardom, then you’re off to go.

Interacting with people who take the time to leave comments is very important, and something I always try and do as quickly as possible, but I do close comments on a post after 30 days because beyond that time it is just spam.

Most of the time yes, but sometimes I get google traffic to older blog posts and someone will leave a genuine comment, so I personally just leave comments open forever. However, I make it so that anyone who is submitting a comment for the first time has to be approved by me before it is published. Anyone who has already been approved by me (I believe it goes by email address) it will then automatically publish.

I thinks a biggest mistake are newbie bloggers are doing is to copy other websites contents, Being original with your content increases your reader’s trust in you. Your readers will soon grow to know, appreciate, and expect your writing style. So newbies have to write their original contents on their site.

    • Lisha says:

Hey Wajid, thanks for that tip. I completely agree. It’s important to be yourself and write from your perspective, your knowledge, your thoughts 🙂

  3. Great tips!

I’ve had my blog for about 2 years. As every blogger, I would love to drive more readers to my posts and always share on several social media platforms. I hoped that by now, I would have a greater number of readers, so wonder whether my content is good enough in today’s world of multi-million blogs?

Hi Nilla, Your blog will be more likely to grow more traffic quicker if you grow your social media more and more over time, write evergreen content (content that doesn’t expire quickly, like news) continue to tweet your old blog posts often, use more keywords that people search more often, think of good long-tail keyword phrases. I have blog posts on each of these topics. Also, because you are a photographer, I would definitely get on instagram because it is currently the most active social media network and for some reason people on instagram are much more likely to connect and interact. Also, don’t forget to encourage people to subscribe to your blog, especially via email. That way they will get an email every time you publish a new blog post.
