A few years back there was a syndicated game show called “Lingo”, maybe you watched it. I was quite a fan as I enjoy just about any type of word game. On the show, contestants battled to solve 5-letter word puzzles.
When it comes to your blog or niche website, your battle with lingo is no game. Instead it is very serious. Now that’s not to say you can’t have fun with your site, it simply means you must learn to speak the lingo of your audience. Whether you’re blogging for fun or working at building an online business, it is all-important that you understand the language, jargon, and well simply the vocabulary your audience uses.
Basically, if you don’t speak their language you’ll never build an audience of readers or buyers. They’ll instantly know they’re being marketed to by an “outsider.” On the other hand, if you talk as they do, if you learn to talk the talk and walk the walk, then you’ll be more likely to build trust and rapport. This will provide you with a much better chance of being let into their lives and their wallets.
How to Learn Their Lingo
So how do you learn the lingo of your niche market? How do you make sure you’re using the language that the market is used to? Here are a few tips.
Frequent Blogs and Forums
Before you actually jump into a market, start off reading their message boards, forums, and blogs to get a feel for their lingo. These are the places users come to discuss their ideas, problems, and solutions in a somewhat friendly laid back manner. This is as close as you’ll get online to hearing a casual in-person discussion.
Unlike authoritative websites that structure their language carefully and per technical standards, forums and blogs are conversational platforms where you’ll get the chance to really pick up the slang of a market.
Read these sites until you start to get a sense of how people talk and then feel free to participate. Anytime a word or acronym comes up that you don’t recognize, look it up.
Pay Attention To Two Key Areas
There are two especially important areas worth paying attention to:
- How people express their problems
- How things are measured
For example, in online marketing a few of the key phrases to pay attention to may include: SERPs, unique visitors, CTR, backlinks, PR, nofollow, opt-in rate, etc.
To an outsider, these words and acronyms may seem foreign and mean nothing. But if an outsider wanted to come in and speak the lingo, then these become very important words to learn.
Figure out how a market talks about their problems. Figure out how they measure their success. Learn to use those words eloquently and you’ll be able to speak to the heart of your reader and customer.
Study Competitor’s Websites and Sales Letters
Chances are your successful competitors already have winning websites and sales letters that are well written and crafted to the language of the niche market.
Your job is to study these sites and their sales letters. Even if you feel well versed by visiting the blogs and forums, you’ll very likely pick up language that works specifically well for selling to that market.
Focus in on the parts of the sales letter get you the most excited? What are the phrases, stories, emotions that your competitor is using?
Take the best parts and model your site and sales letters after them. Make them your own by using your own voice and style but mold them into your efforts. After all while recreate the wheel when a proven strategy already delivers results.
When you do this well, your blog and niche sites will become the resources for future marketers to study to learn the niche language, jargon, and vocabulary.
