Individuality for Design Lovers – Plus, How to Start Crowdfunding With a Bang

Apple is famous for refined design and user experience, thought through into great detail. Most users of a MacBook are happy with their laptop. However, some would like to add a more personal touch to it. The reason many MacBook owners refrain form decorating their device with stickers, is the concern that these might leave residue behind when trying to remove them.

The Birth of the Customized Glowing MacBook Lid Image

My brother, Bernhard, and I set out to find an innovative and flexible solution to individualise a MacBook and foster self expression, diversity and individual design. After 3 years of research and development we launched tabtag, a glowing, removable and reusable sticker for MacBooks.

The tabtag uses the glowing apple on the MacBook lid as a light source in order to illuminate defined parts of designs, making them glow. Tabtags are made with environmental friendly materials in Austria. Printed on a special adhesive film, tabtags can be applied, removed and reused many times without residue. Each tabtag is equipped with a transparent tongue which allows easy removal. Should the adhesive side of the tabtag get dusty after several reuses, it can be rinsed with water to improve its adhesive qualities again.

The initial idea for tabtag evolved from the challenge of drawing with white colour on a black canvas. Due to the lack of a bright enough white colour, as the designer I started to look for a possible fusion between the glowing white of a screen with the complete darkness of a black canvas. Searching for a flat and white light source I realised that the glowing apple on his MacBook would live up to these requirements perfectly. From there the idea to personalise MacBooks with individually glowing, removable and reusable stickers began to take shape.

In order to fund our project, we launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and got funded within only 2 weeks. The first tabtag collection includes 18 designs. In addition to that exists the possibility to order custom tabtags with a freely eligible design or branding. Until June 30th it is possible to back tabtag on Kickstarter and help it take off and fly. After that it will be possible to pre-order tabtags on tabtag.com.

How to Start Crowdfunding With a Bang

Crowdfunding is becoming more and more popular among inventors and creative people. Especially in Europe, banks are very conservative when it comes to loaning money to startups. Many who have successfully funded startups through crowdfunding were turned down by banks before.

There are a lot of articles out there on how to launch a successful campaign on Kickstarter or other crowd funding platforms. The creators of tabtag had to learn the hard way, that it is important to share an idea or project long before launching a crowd funding campaign in order to build up an audience and anticipation.

It is also very important to plan and prepare the campaign as much as possible in advance in order to be able to strike on day 1 of the campaign, send thousands of emails and press releases at the same time, publish content on social media and be present on Twitter as well. The bigger the marketing team during this crucial phase, the better.

However all this is of little value if the product does not resonate with the crowd of early adopters who visit crowd funding platforms searching for innovative and cool stuff. The attention span of internet users is ever decreasing and one has to design an user experience as seamless and to-the-point as possible in order to achieve that the users actually want to respond to a call-to-action. One mouse click instead of two, or a pre-populated field in a form can go a long way.

One might say that there is even a slightly spiritual component to interactions between the creator and his backers. The more the creator listens and gives to his crowd – rather than talks, trying to make people do things he wants – the more the crowd will respond to him, give him valuable feedback, and become part of the adventure. The main intention behind tabtag is the desire to contribute to the world and make it become a more colourful and positive place.

Have you ever created a crowdfunding campaign? What lessons did you learn from your experience?

What a fantastic idea! I reall wish I could come up with ideas like this and see them through, but sadly I come up with great ideas and then I come up with a list of reason why they won’t work. :(

Do you plan on making any that are of different sizes fro people who don’t have a Macbook, but would like to use these kinds of stickers on their laptops?

    • Hi Dean,

Thank you for your nice comment! You are right, having an idea is the easier part, while making it become a reality takes a lot of effort and perseverance.

We are not planing to make tabtags for PCs in the near future, because what makes them unique is there ability to glow in different shapes and colors apart form being easily removable and reusable.

However we are testing other options and eventually might come up with tabtags for PCs as well.

Please support us on Kickstarter and like us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/tabtags – so we can keep you up to date.
      Best,

      Volker

Fear and doubt are the top 2 things that will keep you from accomplishing your goals and turning your dreams into reality, so throw that fear and doubt in the toilet and make it happen! :)
